The female sex organ. The original signification of the word was “support”, “origin”, “source”. The word “yoni” is derived from the root “YU” (to unify, to tie). This term has a large specter of significations : primordial cause, the source of the changing world, home, vulva, etc. The graphical representation of the YONI is a triangle pointing downwards, an analogy image to the vagina and a symbol of the mystery of creation. The tantric texts prescribe the adoration of the YONI in various ways because it can offer access to subtle creative, and universal energies. Quite often the YONI is adored together with the LINGAM (phallus).
